Penguins were the second non-member underwater animal available.
When the player goes to the Pet Stop with a Pet Polar Bear, they can buy a mini penguin accessory, which follows them around.
The Penguin is the first of many birds in Animal Jam Classic, but it is currently the only flightless bird in the game (until the currently unreleased Ostrich is available) and the only one that can access the underwater areas.

If a penguin is wearing a slingshot while sleeping, a strange glitch causes the slingshot to move up and down, get bigger, shrink, and grow bigger again. This pattern repeats.

When a Penguin is wearing a scarf in the photo booth, it is not seen.
If a non-member entered the "penguins" code while they already had two active animals, the Penguin would be locked even if the player recycled one of their active animals after the fact. However, the player could still use it if their active animals are both land-only by simply traveling to an underwater area, which would automatically switch to the locked Penguin.
